When do you have the right to kill a person?

self defence....ie when you believe your own life is in danger from a third party. However, you cannot kill someone in order to simply save your own life....such as killing a fellow a fellow passenger in a life boat so that you can eat them.

When you're the state appointed executioner.
You have the right to defend yourself and in some states others. Until that person is no longer a threat to you, you can defend yourself with deadly force. The main part being 'no longer a threat'.
If you can run away they are no longer a threat. Lock yourself in a room, they are no longer a threat. If you smash them in the knee with a bat and they are injured, they are no longer a threat.
If however you have shot them 10 times and they are still coming at you. They are still a threat and you can keep plugging away. It make take you killing them for them to no longer be a threat.
i dont belive in killing people and i dont think other people have these rites either but if there is anyone who feels like killing someone they should seek help

Disregarding various countries laws. The answer boils down to saving your life or that of others when there is a direct and real threat to it.

Take for example a person with a machine gun entering a school and starting to fire at the children. If there was a gun near you that you could get - would you not shoot to kill him before he killed more?

Those people who say that life should never be taken would no doubt happily sit back and watch the holocaust even if they had the power to kill someone to stop it.

The simple fact that those people fail to understand is that if they were in a position to kill a person to stop them killing a victim and stood bye and did nothing - they would be just as guilty of the murder!
In self defense, no problem. Also in defense of my property or my family. Break into my house, expect to get shot.
You never have the right to. It depends what system of morals and ethics you live by. If I was out with someone I loved and someone held a knife or a gun to them and threatened to rape or kill them then I would have no problem justifying killing them where they stood. Same as if someone hurt my child, i would kill them, no questions, no remorse, no worries about serving time or whatever. A lot of laws we have today protect the rights of criminals which to me, is a load of crap. If you feel that your life or the life of another is in danger because of the actions of a criminal i feel you should have the right to defend yourself in an appropriate level relative to the threat and if that means killing them then so be it!

If they would do harm to you or yours. its self preservation. However if you are in the military it would be under orders but that would be over and above the fact that they would do harm to you and yours.

In self defence you have the right to protect yourself even if you kill someone to do it.
Well.... by killing someone, you are taking away their life and playing God. So really, you never have a right to kill anyone.

But in cases where there has been a lot of physical abuse or the murder is in self defence, I think the line becomes a little blurry.
You have the same right as someone would have to kill you.

why not ask the family of Paul Kelly who was stabbed they know who killed him but can not do anything a poem naming the killer has been made public but still nothing, now a rap by the killer him self.
