Do you think it is right that some states are making it illegal to talk on cell phones while driving??

yes, because many people I saw in pictures and my dad lecturing to me is that many of those are teenagers who get into car accidents, its a way of distraction while driving mostly in the freeway.
Considering how many times I'm almost run over by some jackass talking on his cell phone? Yes.

You can kill someone by not paying attention.
Yes. Here in england it is complately banned. This is due to the number of accidents caused by people using their cell phones while driving. As they went paying attention to the road. Around 30% of road ccidents are caused by people o the phone.
Most people flatter themselves if they think they can drive adequately and talk on a cellphone at the same time. I wouldn't push for a law, but I wouldn't shed a tear if 'they' passed a law either. External laws are for people that don't have functioning internal laws to guide their behavior.

But why wait? Doesn't the government tell us what to do enough? Everyone that lays claim to being responsible should change their cellphone behavior, and encourage others as well, or rest assured, the heavy hand of Big Brother will do it for us.

The hit squad strikes again, I see.
YES YES YES
What is so important that someone cannot either pull over and talk or wait a few minutes to get to where they are going?
I have seen a man driving in front of me weaving all over the road and when I finally was able to pass him I saw he was on the phone with one hand, drinking coffee with the other and steering with his knees.
yes

how many people are killed every year by drivers that think they are capable of handling autos that weigh 3800# while multi tasking !!
yes. majority of time you get cut off, or someones driving strange its someone on the cell phone who is only paying half their attention to driving.
it is completely illegal in the UK to talk on your mobile phone whilst driving. a hands free kit is needed. i think this is sensible and the right thing to do, because both hands and minimum distraction are needed whilst driving.
You know the answer to this you burk. If your child was run over by a car because the driver was distracted by the phone conversation he was having. (Would you be asking this question at all)
yes I do, most people can't drive as it is, nevermind when they are distracted by a phone stuck to their head. There's no reason to be talking on a phone while driving, the call can wait.
Some states!! They should make it illegal in all states.

Uk it is illegal to talk on your mobile whilst driving, buy a handsfree kit and save lives!

xx
yes.

you're about 4 times more likely to be in a car accident while using a cell phone.
I think it's not right. What makes talking to someone on my cell different from me talking to someone in the passenger seat? At least with my cell phone, I'm looking straight ahead and I'm not turning my head to make eye contact with anyone.

But there's problem with driving with one hand on the wheel, but I personally drive like that anyway and I know a lot of other people that do too.
I absolutely agree with this legislation. Talking on a cell phone, with or without handsfree devices, takes the driver's attention away from the task at hand, which should be driving. I've witnessed dozens of near misses where one or both drivers were chatting while driving.
Yes I do,it is already illegal in the UK.

Thousands of accidents are caused through it each year.
Absolutely. Its already illegal throughout the UK. If you need to talk that desperately that you can't take a second to pull over, buy a hands-free kit.
Yes, there are thousands of accidents that can be attributed to cell phone use. When your attention is distracted you are not as safe behind the wheel. This is one thing that can be controlled.

Some studies suggest the use of cell phone actually quadruple your chance of an accident. In 2003 there were 2600 traffic fatalities and 330,000 injuries attributed to cell phone usage/distractions.
Even with a hands free phone, it is dangerous because you are talking to someone not in the car and it is still distracting. Sometimes, just talking to someone right there in the car is distracting, so down with cell phones in the car, unless it is an emergency, like a breakdown, or wreck!!
yes,its illegal here in ireland so people use blue tooth technology, blue tooth is fairly cheap and a hell of alot cheaper than the life of a human, scum included.deaths are down here which can only be a good thing.my dad died on the roads -not his fault-so any prevention can only be a good thing
Yes, cell phones are a huge distraction and too many drivers refuse to invest in a $30 hands free set that would make driving and talking safe.

I am not sure about you, however when I am on the road, I do prefer to share it with drivers who are paying attention to what they are doing.

If you need to take a call you can pull over, invest in a hands free set or call back later. There is no call important enough to put fellow drivers in danger.
It should be illegal everywhere. Far too many accidents are caused by people not concentrating on the road but on their phone. Here in the UK it is already illegal - unfortunately, not many people seem to realise this. I often see people driving whilst using their phone/smoking/drinking/reading map.
women on cell phones are just as bad as old asian ladies driving mini vans.
Yes. It's right.

There are hands-free set ups. Options.

It's just a huge, stupid distraction.

The fact that we got along for decades without the ability to chat with our friends on the phone while driving proves that we can. You'd think that'd show us something.
I certainly do. Very rarely do I talk on mine while driving and actually I normally have the ringer off. I see way too many drivers paying zero attention to everything going on around them while they are on the phone. Not to mention, a few years back in this area, a young woman was too busy searching for her ringing cell phone while driving and didn't notice the stopped bus with flashing red lights until she nailed (and killed) a little boy getting off the bus.

Added scenario you put out there - let's see...someone shot me in the side...so, not only am I being distracted by talking on the cell phone while driving...I've also got this tremendous pain in my side to keep my mind somewhere else besides the road. Sure thing. Not only am I putting myself at risk, but all those around me.

Answer:
Guess I'll be the lone dissenter. No, it's not. There are already laws in place against reckless driving, so for those drivers who are such bad drivers that they are distracted, the laws in place should cover it. Thus, it's redundant.

Personally, I think if you can't drive and talk at the same time, you have no business driving in the first place.

While it's true that cell phones are a distraction, so are: smoking, drinking coffee, eating, changing the radio station, or CD's, checking your GPS, etc, etc. Until all of those activities are banned, a ban on cell phones is pointless.
What is so damn important to talk about that it can't wait until you are parked somewhere?

It's like a war zone out there with those damn things, and I rage at all the azzholes that are driving stupidly while talking on the phone.

It shouldn't need to be a law. It should be common sense.
Its illegal in the UK and that doesn't seem such a bad thing so why not?
A study was done that showed that you are more likely to be in an accident talking on the phone than if you are driving drunk.

I think most people have had some close call with a person talking on the phone while driving. I know I've had several myself. So yes, for public safety make the law.
Yes, people need to pay attention to the roads, not their phones!
I totaly approve.
My twin sister was caught driving and on the phone and the policeman (who was young and probably gave in to her amazing eyes) let her off with a warning.
I was pissed.
I know that yes, it is possible to drive and speak, but you can never know, for 1 second you are distracted and another man is dead for life.
Car accidents are the biggest source of unnatural deaths.
In my country new drivers are allowed only one passenger in the car as to be less distracted...

I think that car accidents and road safety should be taken more seriously!
