My husband and I have a home we rented to a tenant. The home is in my mother-in-law name. She just signed a power of attorney over to my husband to represent the case. Is this allowed in New York courts.

A power of attorney can never permit a non-attorney to represent someone in court. Also, contrary to the first responder's answer, attorneys are permitted in small claims court. However, they do not usually appear, as the fee permitted is usually ridiculous.
