is this any different to a company that sells a debt to a debt collection agency. Debt collection agencies buy debts past its sell-by date companies all the time. i have never heard of nation selling settlements though, not ever.

Most of the companies that buy settlements will look at who the defendant was and do some research on the defendant. They likely will not give you any money due to the risk that they won't be capable of collect from him. The first poster was on the right trail. You may be able to garnish his wages, depending on the state you are surrounded by. However, you should talk with a legal aid attorney almost doing that and putting liens on his property. If he doesn't have property (car, house, etc.) talk with the attorney roughly what you need to do to keep your judgement alive.
