Civil suit. Hire lawyer or represent yourself?
We are looking to find a lawyer regarding a civil suit. We have never have issues before and have never needed a lawyer so I am only just wondering what are the normal costs of lawyers in Alberta, Canada. Without much proof and roughly a he said she said type thing. Would you hire a lawyer or represent yourself? Have you done this before and who did you use. Did you win?

I can't comment on the typical fees charged by lawyer in Alberta. However, there is certainly no charge for calling around and asking going on for hourly rates. As for the second part of your question, if the opposing group has an attorney and you do not, you are at a marked disadvantage. Imagine playing a major league baseball winter sport with your friends and family, and the opposing squad is a professional league team. 9 times out of 10, a person representing themself against a party near an attorney gets slaughtered. That's not because the pro se litigant isn't a smart person, but the law and court procedure is complex. It take years to get it down and learn what to do and how. And of course, the rules are constantly varying. The bottom line is, if you can afford an attorney then you should get one.
