It says, in response to the Supreme Court approving the ban on 'partial-birth abortion'
'In Illinois, a similar late-term prohibition on certain abortion procedures passed and was signed into law by former Gov. Jim Edgar in 1997. But it was knocked down by a federal appeals court in 2000.
If anti-abortion advocates wanted to revive that prohibition, they would have to go back to the General Assembly and pass new legislation, legal experts said.
Pam Sutherland, CEO of the Illinois Planned Parenthood Council, characterized Wednesday's court ruling as a 'big bite out of Roe vs. Wade' but probably would not change the landscape substantially in Illinois.
'Where we're lucky in this state now, quite frankly, is that we have a 100-percent pro-choice Senate president who would never allow an anti-abortion bill to make it out of the Senate,' Sutherland said. '
The Supreme Court has upheld the ban on Dilation and Extraction procedures (otherwise known as Partial Birth Abortions).
