Chewing gum in Singapore? WHY?¿?
Chewing Gums are not allowed in Singapore...
They dont want people spitting out their gum willy nillie and ruining public places with it. Gum can be a nuisance and I think they are trying to avoid that. Although I agree it does seem a little more than strict.
Having been to Singapore, I can tell you it is the cleanest city I have ever been in, in my entire life. Ashtrays and garbage cans almost every 50 feet on public sidewalks.
It truly is a beautiful place, and they work hard to keep it that way.

Actually the official reason was to deter the cost of cleaning chewing gum from the streets and sidewalks. But the law was enacted when Singapore was trying to entice foreign investment. This law proved to foreigners that the government had absolute control and could create legislature such as this without public debate or dissent so it's a safe place for your investments.
