Can a Hospital take you to court for an unpaid bill?
I live in Florida and I have an old hospital bill that they do not want to receive monthly payments, they only want in full. Can the Hospital take me to court for this bill?
They will most likely not take you to court rather send it to collections, at which point you will be charged an additional fee for processing and handling your account. Your credit will also be impacted. If you fail to settle with collections you can be taken to court however at that point it does become a criminal offense.
Yes.
They sure can - those who are under the misguided impression that hospitals have to accept not being paid for services rendered are sadly mistaken.
A hospital (even a non-profit) is a business like any other. The best time to talk about payment is as soon as the services are rendered, and then they are more willing to work with you.
...sure...it is an unpaid debt and they can sue to enforce and collect it...
They absolutely can. They have the right to demand payment in full at any time, and if you fail to render payment they most certainly can take you to court.
Pay your bill and get it over with.
Yes, they can take you to court and they can garnish your wages. If the hospital bill is old, then you have long since passed the period of when you would have been able to make payment arrangements with them. If they want the balance in full, and they are threatning to take you to court..chances are they are a pre-collection agency for the hospital.
Answer:
they can hold you in the hospital and unoperate on you...even repossess the organs they transplanted.
They'll probably send it to a collection agency, who will end up working out a payment plan. If you don't pay it the collection agency will take you to court.
I think so
Most of the time they won't. What will happens is that your out standing bill will go into collections and that will ruin your credit. If you call most of the time they will set up a payment plan and eventually you will pay everything off.
This just happened to me. I owed a hospital $1,375 I was sent to collections and about 3 years later I was supeod with court papers. Well instead of getting a garnishment on my wages or anything, I borrowed the money from a friend and I wound up paying $1,495 for court costs and attorneys fees. It was more cause they wanted me to pay interest. But I negoitated that since I paid it in full.
