What happens to shoplifters?

I got caught stealing food and a few other odds and ends from Wal Mart. Honestly, I have no clue why I did it. Anyway, it come to just under $155. This is my first offense, I'm 20 years old, own no lawyer, can't afford one, and also can't afford to lose my job. What should I do? I even offered to pay for everything while I be still there, but they said it was too late. I didn't take taken to jail, but I did get cuffed and questioned. I'm frightened. Can someone please help me?
if its your 1st offense u should be ok..you wont goto jail for 10 years or anything but u will probly be fined and booked and probly put on probation
did you take the goods off the premises? Unless you hold walked into the carpark with the goods, you haven't stolen them as they haven't vanished the building. chances are you'll get a fine and a criminal record, but if you didn't depart the building you didn't steal anything and don't let them threaten you with the law incentive you haven't broken the law, If they prosecute you, which I am sure they will, you can request an attorney. It is a court appointed one, they can not deny you this right. Take it, and follow his advice. Don't shop lift again, because subsequent time you will be in far more trouble.
When you go to your pretrial, the judge will ask if you enjoy a lawyer or want a court appointed one. Take the court appointee. Then you will receive a new court date. Pressure your lawyer to plea for a slighter charge.
