Suicide-Australia (QLD)?

If a person is threatening to commit suicide, and has attempted it several times before (although there is no record of it, they never went to hospital or a doctor afterwards), is there anything that can be done legally? I assume suicide is illegal in QLD, is there anytway this person could maybe be arrested and evaluated or something. so they're not in a position to carry out their threat? Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

It really depends on the state, it varies greatly. But, just know, that no matter what, it sounds like you've been doing everything you possibly can to help. When someone wants to die, there's not alot you can do to stop them. I know that sounds harsh and cold, but they have to help themselves. Can you offer to go to counseling with them? Kathy Cronkitt, the daughter of Walter Cronkitt, wrote a great book 'On the Edge of Darkness'. Get it, read it, and give it to your friend. It may be the first time that she can actually see that someone was able to grasp her feelings and say it better than she could have. Good luck. You're a good friend.
In the USA, Califronia to be specific, one can call the police and tell them of a suicide threat. They go to the suicidal person's location and intervene. They may take them into custody and transport them to a hospital mental ward for a 72 hours evaluation. If they are no longer a threat to themselves they are released. If they are found to still be threat to themselves they may continue to keep them. This cannot go on forever, and eventually a hearing may have to take place to hold them over longer. This would be to determine their mental competency. You may have a similar set of laws.
I had a similar problem with a member of my family and unfortunately the mental health people that I spoke to said while she was in and out of hospital that their hands were tied. I just have to hope that in one of these manic episodes that she does not succeed in her goal.We have a real responsibility to look out for our mentally ill people but they seem to be inconvenient for any government.
