Is it against the law for parents to hit their children?

What if you use an object?

What if you leave marks?

We were discussing this in the office today. Nobody here hits their kids. It was just a discussion. Sombebody said it was against the law to hit children with a belt. Another person said it was only agains the law if you left marks. We're in California. Does anybody know the law?

Please note: I'm not asking your opinion. I'm asking about the law! What is the law in regard to hitting your kids. When is it illegal?
It is never legal as far as I know.
The Bible is for the rod. Not over the face and head on the legs and butt. Correction is one thing, beating is another. Check with CPS in the state and get it in writeing. But ONLY corect the child when you are not angery and when it is obs. that no other type of punishment will work.
'NO' in my state it is not against the law BUT like the girl abve me said CPS will come after U and those ppl will not give up until they get paid
Not a lawyer, so I can't be real sure, but I think the law will read something to the effect of leaving marks. Keep in mind, these are marks that last hours, if not a full day or more.

A wack across the bottom won't qualify. Open hand spanking is fine. Closed fist is against the law (that I know).

Object such as spoon or belt....I don't know. Interesting question.
The Law state : 'parent can use any force necessary to discipline the child, other than deadly force'.
The only problem with this is that there is the Law and then there is CPS. They usually look at things differently.
If you can prove in court (and remember I said Court) that the force you used was necessary for disciplining the child, then you should be fine.
In most cases there are two investigations going, One criminal investigation and the CPS investigation.
Even though they find you not liable criminally CPS might find you civilly responsible causing harm to the child and they can remove the child from under your care.
Spanking them on the butt or smaking them on the face isn't illegal but I think if u make them bleed or leave BIG marks it's agianst the law called child abuse
Technically it's never legal. If someone has a problem with it they could probably call child services and have the kid taken away from you.
In my state it is supposed to be legal, but in reality if you do it, CPS will come after you. Even if you don't leave a bruise or a mark. They can remove your child and may even throw your name in an abuse registry.

Answer:
It is NOT illegal to spank your child.... HOWEVER it is illegal to spank your child hard enough to leave mark. Weather it's with a hand or an object if you leaving bruising on your child that is considered CHILD ABUSE!
