The cops searched my house by mistake ?
The cops busted in my house and sacked my flat, and they just said sorry, we had the wrong house number. I have to get a new door, and fix everything else they busted. What should I do ?
One, you got a lawsuit. Illegal search probably without a warrant. (even if they did it was mistaken). Second, contact the District Attorney and CCRB (Civilian Complaint Review Board). They could better assist you
You have a lawsuit, my Friend.
I'm sorry to tell you this, but in most places in the U.S. you can't 'sue' the police for this 'mistake' nor can you 'collect damages' for stuff the 'broke' while they were in your apartment. All you can do is 'eat it' and fix the stuff yourself ... they did apologize for their mistake, and quite frankly that is really all that they should do. What if someone was holding you hostage and they didn't 'break in' and save you, because they could get sued for it being the 'wrong house'? See what I mean ...
You can file a law suit for damages.
Sue the pigs.
sue
ask em 4 de money........
sue them buddy sue them good call a lawyer
Answer:
Call the chief of police or the District Attorney for their department. They should be willing to pay for repairs for making such a mistake.
Call the Police Department first and tell them that if they do not pay for repairs, you will sue. Please, please, do not sue right off. Give them a chance to fix their wrongs.
Sure, maybe you want more money. But you'll look like a better person for bringing it to them first. Then, maybe they'll respond faster the next time you need them (or not slower if you sue them for $$$). Yah, they 'don't' judge like that, but they do.
File for reimbursment. You'll of course need good itemization and keep evidence of the damage.
Kris is right about the USA, but since you are in the UK it could e different but most likely you will have to pay for it yourself.
Talk to a lawyer. That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. How did they mess the house number up. omg. I would press charges. That is a violation of your constitutional rights. No law enforcement officer can search your house without a warrent. Unless they have probable cause, which they didn't.
By law they committed a crime because they searched your house without a warrant. i also believe that you are able to sue the officers. this can also be counted as a 'breaking and entering'
