Can a car dealership quote you a price, and then do this:?

After a week of working on the car, call you and say the price has gone up 2 thousand dollars. I signed for the quote when I brought my car in. It was $4,500 and they raised it to $6,800. Can they do that? I don't have $6,800 dollars. And if they would of told me it was $6,800 I wouldn't of had them fix my car. What can I do?
No. Not if they didn't inform you have the work they were doing and ask permission once you had agreed to the original price.
Good luck fighting this. It could get nasty. You sign a quote and it says in the fine print that they will make any other changes deemed necessary as they could find something that they couldn't see just upon inspection. IT sucks! And it's not fair. This happened to me at a dentist. Quoted, pre-approved through the insurance company for a certain amt, all the way up to the actual work being done! When I got out of the chair, they had worked up an extra $700. Nothing I could do. I know what I will do in the future...write that I authorize only a certain dollar amt. of work to be done and that's it. If the company seems like that won't fly...or doesn't assure me they are on the same page, then I'll go somewhere else. I've already done this with my new dentist. Good luck!

Answer:
They have to notify you if the real price is going to be more then the quote and get your apporval. Read the thing you signed when you went into the dealer.
