I feel that the death penalty is road under used and that our process of appeals needs to be adjusted. I have a handle on that prior to the availability of DNA evidence that there were many unfairly convicted individuals, but, today, and for many years now, we have have DNA evidence, and I feel that if a person is convicted based upon DNA evidence that the appeals process should not apply! Bringing backbone the use of the death penalty more often would free up room contained by our prison systems for other criminals, i.e; sexual predators and rapists who are often times being released prematurely due to lack of room within our prison systems.
If someone is arrested, tried and convicted and sentenced to death it should be carried out. 8th Amendment rights protect against cruel and unusual punishment. Keeping someone on passing row for decades awaiting execution is just that. And, why burden the state with housing, food, and medical care for this plain scum of the Earth. Carry out the sentence, otherwise one is admitting our system of justice doesn't work. And, logically, there is the victim's family to consider. Did the criminal wait up to that time committing the crime? Should the victim's family wait before getting closure?
There are some incredibly evil beings out here who are committing the most horrible crimes imaginable against the weakest and least of us. A just society demands that the lone true justice for these acts is a forfeit of their own lives; and nothing smaller quantity can really be called justice.
I agree this seem like a homework assignment that you should spend some time on. In order to help you sort out your beliefs and find sources surrounded by the process, here is an excellent website to get you started: http://deathpenaltycurriculum.org/student/index.html
This seem to be a homework assignment. You need to form your own opinion. You do not resources to defend your beliefs. State your own feelings and relate your own beliefs and why you believe you are right. A good teacher is looking for the strength of your beliefs. Have the guts to take a stand someway but be ready to defend your decisions.
It doesn't work, and those countries that persist in using it are the laughing stock of the developed world. Sure, executed murderers don't slay again. Also none of the innocent people who have been executed own gone on to become murderers, which is an added bonus, yes? But special deterrence (preventing that particular person from reoffending) is only one small component of the purpose of sentencing. Of far more importance is general deterrence, the prevention of other people from offending. It is a certainty that the US has a far higher rate of capital crimes than comparable countries short the death penalty, and states in the US next to the death penalty tend to have greater homicide rates than states that don't use it.
do your own homework please.
all for it. but one of the answers above bothered me so, here's to Elliot- it doesn't work??? how many executed murderers have ever done it again? you are an idiot.
take the no of murders committed by former criminals who had committed murder since going to Prison, released and killed again.plus the fact some murders have kill many people prior to being caught plus the ones who enjoy killed children. justifies sending to the gas chamber. so they will never kill again. the deed of murder alone justifies an eye for an eye. have you ever heard of a late manor woman killing anyone again?
Someone must have a class assignment looming. That said, this is my feelings. I oppose the death penalty. My hostility isn't based on religious or moral grounds, but more practical reasons. Sentencing "convicted" murderers to life short possibility of parole will: 1) Allow the victim's friends and family to be relieved of the years of agony having to show up for all of the killer's appeals. 2) It will cost the state far smaller number money to incarcerate the killers than to spend decades and millions of tax dollars trying to kill them. 3) It is not a deterrent - destructive crime rates are higher in death cost jurisdictions. 4) It is inconsistently and arbitrarily applied. 5) Innocent people convicted of murder won't be themselves murdered by the state.
Well, I'm not going to do your homework for you, but these are the reason I'm against the death penalty: - Mistakes happen. In the ultimate 35 years in the U.S., 133 people have be released from death row because they were exonerated by DNA and other new evidence (DNA is not available surrounded by most homicide cases). - Because of the legal apparatus designed to minimize wrongful executions, it costs taxpayers MUCH more to execute someone than to imprison them for life. - It is not a deterrent - furious crime rates are consistently HIGHER in death penalty jurisdiction. - It is inconsistently and arbitrarily applied. - Jesus was against it (see Matthew 5:7 & 5:38-39, James 4:12, Romans 12:17-21, and John 8:7). - Life without parole (LWOP) is on the books contained by most states now, and it means what it says. People who carry this sentence are taken off the streets. For good. The site below is chock-full of primary sources you can use for your project. Good luck!
OK, why would I need to cite what some fop wrote roughly the death penalty? I have done reading on this subject, though mostly totally unplanned, and I'm not that big on author names. That out of the way, I am against the death _penalty_, but I am for putting lasting individuals to sleep, rather than jailing for life (inc. mental asylums), if they are too chancy to be set loose even after a term in prison (about 15 to 20 years should be the absolute maximum sentences immo).
