A former landlord is saying some terrible things about my wife and I that are'nt true. slander suit?

The fact that someone said something is not all you need to prove...you need to prove that is cost you money..that's the damages you are seeking....
Find the address's of some of his friends then fake a health department letter that he has herpes and they need to come in to be checked. Don't get mad get revenge!

personal reputation isnt an issue the court will care the least about unless it directly affects you financially.
It's like what Jenn said. I work for a lawyer, and when we get calls about slander, he won't even take them unless it's a business thing - like one business causing another business to lose tens of thousands of dollars. You have to have hard, documented proof of a loss.
Slander is hard to prove, much less collect damages on. You'd have to prove not only that he said it, but that it damaged your reputation.
His true colors will show, and karma will bite him in the ***.
