Why is Alcohol legal but Marijuana isn't?
And please don't say "gateway drug", everyone says that and it doesn't really answer the question of authority. There are plenty of legal gateway drugs, alcohol being one.

No point in copying and pasting the complete thing, but the short answer is that corporate interests influenced the public into a panic over it.
This will answer your question about why marijuana is illegal...... http://www.illuminati-news.com/marijuana-conspiracy.htm
There is just too much money to be made by keeping it risky. You have whole industries centered around it. You have thousands of cops throwing culture in prison for selling it, you have the entire prison industry that houses these drug offenders, you own government agents (DEA) burning fields of it down, you have businessmen and bank that launder the money made from dealing it, etc. Also, when it is illegal, the price gets driven way up. People selling it would never want to see it become cheap and permitted. It would kill their business entirely. They like things just the means of access they are.

Follow the money.
Without getting into why marijuana was outlawed in the first place I'd say marijuana is still banned because much of the propaganda behind the "reefer madness" era is still with us. When people contemplate of beer most folk picture backyard barbecues, sporting events and bikini models. I guarantee you more people think of those scenario then a fat drunken slob beating on his antiquated lady or all the carnage drunk drivers do. That's because millions and millions of dollars are spent on ads which give beer a positive image. Now ruminate of marijuana. To most folk pot conjurers up images of ax murderers, unwashed hippies, Charles Manson, Latino gang bangers, gangsta rappers and innocent young people ruining their lives. This is because the spin masters similar to Harry J. Anslinger (the man who brought us "Reefer Madness") and former FBI director J. Edgar Hoover did such a great job of making people think "marijuana is the worst drug within the history of mankind".
