I was charged with posession of alcohol, can someone please help me out?
I am 17 years old and live in CT, so here is the story. Back in Jan I was caught with alcohol in a car in a parking lot. I was told by a lawyer to plead not guilty, I did. Today I went to court for it. The court went exactly as I thought it was going to originally before everyone else around me starting telling me it was going to be just in and out and they would probably drop the charge. That wasn't how it was. The prosecutor said she would lower the fine 0f $181 to $75 in exchange for a guilty plea. I could tell there was no way this was just gonna get dropped and I realized all those people who told it would be different were dead wrong. Anyways, I wanted to just except it and deal with the DMV when the time came. Unfortunately my mom was right next to me and she is a lil 'whaky' sometimes and she was telling me we should go to trial because it will go on my record. I just got back a lil while ago and I am so mad. I can't take all the crap happening aroundme anymore. No one seems to
You're getting what you deserve.
Learn your lesson and move on.
You broke the law and are a minor. I work in residence hall on a college campus where a number of students get issued a Minor in Possession charge. If you only have one charge such as this it isn't a big deal. People realize that you make mistakes. However, let this be a lesson to you. Don't do it in college.
Answer:
Assuming you weren't caught drinking the alcohol, you might work with your attorney to determine whether you can force the state to prove that you were aware of the alcohol in the car.
In any case, it's important that you rely on the advice of no one other than your attorney. He or she would let you know whether a guilty plea would go on your record. The lawyer's advice will be worth far more than the folks (like me) offering you advice.
It would appear that in CT, it is illegal for you to be in possession of alcohol. I may or may not agree with the law but that does not matter - and there is nothing I could do for you anyway. But if indeed you were in possession and it is illegal, then there is little you can do but face the consequences of breaking the law. And you might consider not doing so again.
