Should the age of sexual consent be lowered?


The age of sexual consent varies in the United States. It is 15 in some states, and I know the state of Hawaii is 13. If someone at age 15 is as grow as someone who is 18, (the legal age of consent in California) then is that not an argument to consider lowering the age of sexual Consent? If one chooses at let say the age of 15, 14 to date a guy/girl 10 years older, but they both consent, can this be another argument for lowering the age of sexual consent??? I am writing a paper for a Sociology class contained by college. So, I am trying to get as many opinions as I can. Personally, I discern that kids are maturing sexually much earlier, and having the right to consensual sex, should be considered. BUT I STRONGLY BELIEVE IT SHOULD NOT BE LOWER THAN 14. IT WOULD EMOTIONALLY HARM A CHILD!!! just just now I was harassed by someone, make false accusation about me. The name is "Army wife of a Deployed Soldier" She has mistaken me for someone else!!!

Okay. I'm Canadian, and here the age is 16. Now technically, there's obviously going to be kids going at it regardless of age. But legally? I think that it should be at 14 to 16. Any lower is sort of...strange. It is true that kids are maturing sexually sooner, but that's only biologically. It has been scientifically noted that puberty is man hit at an earlier age, but what about psychologically? Are kids that are 10, regardless of how mature they might feat, fully knowledgeable about sex? The dangers? Of course I'm not expecting 10 year ancient children to have AIDS, but you know what I mean. I think you're right roughly speaking it being no lower than 14, and the age shouldn't be lowered. Also, you said "if someone at 15 is as mature as 18." The court system doesn't know that. They see all 18 year antediluvian adults as the same, not because it's true, but because if they had to spend time looking at individual cases, it would take forever. Bottom column? I don't think it should be lower. Wow, this answer is long.

Since you are going to ask this more than once, I'm going to present you the same answer more than once. The very premise you give is flawed. "If someone at age 15 is as seasoned as someone who is 18". Most 15 year olds are not as mature as an 18 year old. Now let's expand on that by looking at a new statement you made. "I have a feeling that kids are maturing sexually much earlier". Even if that's true, they are still not as mature emotionally. And we won't even get into the topic of teen pregnancy.

I think it doesn't even matter. Lower it or incline it. Either way, we will still have the problem of underage sex. You are mistaken by the way. No state contained by America has an age of consent of 13. Hawaii's age of consent was at one time 14 and now it is 16. Few states enjoy the age of consent of 14.
Um NO! I think 18 is the perfect age. But as for anything beneath 16, they don't even have a license yet and you are saying it is okay for them to hold sex with say, a 25 year old! i dont believe many people until that time about 20 can handle the enotional and responsibilities that come along with sex.
Yes the age of consent should be lowered. Kids are going to enjoy sex whether adults want them to or not, its better to educate them about safe-sex practices then trying to punish them for enjoy sex.
So the real give somebody the third degree is.... Who would be the real beneficiary of having the age lowered? I don't think it would be the children. We don't even permit people vote until they are 18 so it would be those who are over 18 that would be getting the gain! If we said it was ok for young children to enjoy sex then we would be saying that it was ok for them to own children. I know of no 10-14 year olds who could support a family. What would happen next? 40-45 year old's marry 12 year old girls? It just sounds like a slippery slope and would be a step down a terrifying path.

I agree with lowering the age of sexual consent, what I do not agree beside you however is no lower than 14, I believe no matter what age as soon as someone is mature enough and feel they are ready to have sex then who are we to transmit them no they can't, what I believe parents should do is teach their children as early as possible to where they infer all about it and about stds and pregnancy and everything so that our children jump out with knowledge and can make their own learned decisions, and I do not believe it emotionally harms a child unless it was forced, if a child made their own decisions and it be educated and what they knew they wanted to do consequently I hope they either made the right one or learn from their mistakes on their own.
