My mom was married for 50yrs and my father died 3 weeks ago...what happens to his social security check ?
Your Mother will be receiving them but I think she has to notify them and fill out the paperwork. I'm sorry that you lost your Father may God be with you & your family at this time.
It goes to his wife. Why wouldn't it?
Answer:
Social Security should be notified and any checks payable to the decedent should be returned. Call SSA toll-free at 1-800-772-1213. If benefits were being paid by check, DO NOT CASH any checks received for the month in which the beneficiary died or thereafter. Return the checks to Social Security as soon as possible.
If there is direct deposit of Social Security to a bank account, notify the bank. Request that any funds received for the month of death and later be returned to Social Security as soon as possible.
Monthly survivors benefits can be paid to certain family members, including the beneficiary's widow or widower, dependent children and dependent parents. For more information about survivor benefits, click here: http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10084.html...
For information about widow's and widower's benefits, click here: http://www.ssa.gov/ww&os2.htm
It stops and Mum will have to re apply for her own individual one.
Your mother shall start receiving them
