I have a check I received that was NSF from the writer for $200. What should I do and what can I expect?

I was thinking about giving it over to the District Attorney but I have absolutely no faith in our justice dept. Last month I had a guy empty my checking acct completely with frauded checks and ran up my credit card bill. He was in jail for less than a day and they let him go. Can I expect the same lack of care for this NSF check?

Answer:
There are 3 things you can do. Keep the check and try to call in and verify funds every 1st and 15th and see if you can catch money in the bank. You can take it to the criminal courts and talk to a detective. They may take the case if there are tangible goods involved, however....if you sold a service for $200, they are less likely to take it. You might sell the check to a collector and get up to the full amount of the check. They will receive even more than that when they get it cleared. GOOD LUCK!
In WV, where I live, you go to the county courthouse, in the County Clerk's office, and file a complaint. After filing, you pay a filing fee (it covers the expense of serving the summons), and wait for a court date. When in court, the magistrate will ensure that the check and fee are paid (you won't get any fee but the filing fee), or issue an arrest warrant( at no cost to you) on the party that wrote the bad check. I'm sure that it works pretty much the same where you are.
