A cop swiped my fake ID 10 years ago. He is now using it as an example in convienence stores. is this legal?

I paid the 220.00 fine and served a 90 suspension on my licencse for altering the birthdate. I am not sure if he is allowed to show store clerks the licensce with my name showing like that. This happened in VT and I now live in FL but my name is making my father and brother embarassed. How do I resolve this?
Well actually I think it is legal. It no longer belongs to you, it belongs to the gov. You could try to protest it, but honestly I think its a losing battle.

Hey, and if the picture is a good one you should be flattered, you are becoming famous one conveint store at a time.
It sounds really embarrassing, but it also sounds very legal. Sorry!
It should be legal if it is not. Though they might consider blocking your name out.
of course ...and ID doesn't belong to you ... it is property of the state.
People on here keep suggesting that it's legal, since the id belongs to the state.
Whether it actually does or not..Bleh.. that's a legal discussion for later..
However, what they're over-looking, is the fact that your picture and your name can never 'belong' to the state.
Your identity...
I'd check into legal help, seek a lawyer to write him a cease and desist letter.
I'd consider what he's doing as deflammation of character...
Yes, it's legal and about the only thing you can do is write a letter requesting that he stop doing this. I seriously doubt if it will do much good, though.

Answer:
If you were over the age of 18 when your license was confiscated, your conviction is a matter of public record and it is perfectly legal for the police to use your altered license as an example. The only thing they would/should not be able to use is your SSN# if it was listed, or your DL# if it is the same. The rest of the information would be a matter of public record and not protected under any privacy act as it was altered, which is a crime. It is not defaming your charachter either, as you either plead guilty or were convicted of the crime.

Instead of approaching it from a legal perspective, it would be best to approach it as a personal plea to the department that is using it that it was 10 years ago, you paid your fine and debt to society and have done nothing since that time and by them using the ID as an example it is an embarrassment to your family and you wish for them to cease using it as you are sure there are more recent and more technologically advanced methods by which those that are underage are now altering their licenses.
Driver licenses are the property of the state.
Contact the company that distributes the little flier thing. This is lawful I believe but not moral. Tell the company how you feel. If they have any human bone in their body, they will do away with them. The hard part would be getting rid of all those fliers. They are everywhere. Best of luck to you. Can you choose me as your best answer please. I LOVE YOU LONG TIME. You don't have to. This is ridiculous though. You cant help what you did in the past.
Sorry, it's property of the government, and you lost rights to it when you had it confiscated. You can talk to the store owner in person, or write a letter, and explain to him/her why you'd like it removed, but that's about the only thing you can do.
That is lame. I would start making some phone calls. Get it taken down. If they refuse, call a lawyer & see if you have a case. Don't listen to the people who say it's legal. I don't think it is...It's like hanging someone's mugshot in the store, long after the fact. It's nobody's business that you broke a b*ll$hit law 10 years ago.
Sure he can do that. Your problem is a matter of public record, your license evidence that no longer belongs to you. You are just going to have to accept it is another repercussion of breaking the law.
if it is, it shouldnt be. someone should pop that pig.
I have read everyone's answer and I'm not sure on actual law here. However because of the Privacy Act of 1974 (I think that's the correct year) while they can use your D.L. your name should be changed, to include your DL#, address, and any other private information that is on that card. Otherwise he is breaking federal law and is open for a civil law suit.
i would file a complaint to the police department..they cant advertise ur name in public freely like that..thats why u see on cop shows they have to blurr the bad guys face out even though they are getting arrested..they have refused to be shown publicly like that....i would file a complaint and talk to a lawyer and see what the laws are
You paying the fine is like pleading guilty. And the license belongs to the state and is evidence in a case which means the PD owns it. They can use your name because you plead guilty. Sorry.
Usually they tend to have a obviously fake name with a cartoon photo (like John Q. Public with a Yahoo like catroon avatar as a pic)

I had an ID taken back in the 80's ( i'm telling my age).
That was about 600 miles away from here- I hope they are not doing that with mine.
I'm going to guess that you are just SOL on this one- but don't feel bad, you aren't the only one.
It is very childish and foolish to ever have a fake ID. So you do not deserve an answer.
