Can we finally cancel China's trading status when they do this?

Colgate-Palmolive Co. (NYSE:CL - news) on Thursday said counterfeit 'Colgate' toothpaste that may contain a toxic chemical had been found in discount stores in four U.S. states.
'There are indications that this product does not contain fluoride and may contain diethylene glycol,' the company said in a statement.

Colgate-Palmolive said it does not use, nor has ever used, diethylene glycol as an ingredient in its toothpaste anywhere in the world. The chemical, known as DEG and sometimes illegally used as an inexpensive sweetener and thickening agent, is commonly found in solvents and antifreeze.

The Colgate-Palmolive announcement comes less than two weeks after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned consumers to avoid any toothpaste made in China after inspectors found DEG in tubes sold at two stores.

you are right to wonder. but think of the security issues. We dont need more enemies.

What we need is to strengthen our position with Chinese Gov't and ask them to tighten their own laws. After all it wasnt the gov't that shipped the toothpaste was it? and it wasn't the 1,000,000,000 honest Chinese workers either. Why punish everyone? They buy our goods too.

And what of our own security? why isnt The US and Canadian gov'ts inspecting more. Especially consumables.
What a silly question.

That was the result of ILLEGAL PRODUCTION and NOT STATE SANCTIONED!

If the government of China was directly involved in that, then of course yank the status.

Do you expect every product and manufacturing process to be under very strict state oversight to prevent this? Wouldn't that be called 'socialism' or worse, 'communism'?

Peace

There's long been a debate over China's trading status -- the bottom line is that most who analyze the situation come to the conclusion that the US needs China, just as much if not more than China needs the US. We rely on China for a lot of cheap goods and services -- thus our huge trade deficit. Where would that void be filled once we started a protectionist policy with China?
