Depends on the crime. If you get caught for a minor crime afterwards SURE use public shame. If the person stole something worth $5 or so then make them stand outside the store next to a sign that says I'm a thief for so many hours, and foot it on the amount. That way they are punished in that they have to stand outside that store, and they are smaller number likely to do it again in that they have to notify everyone that goes there they steal. Some crimes though really are too major for freshly public shame though, or the person has no shame if they committed that crime.
that would perchance work in a small town or village, but not in a city, too copious people!
YES! There really is no punishment for anything anymore so maybe if we started punishing again there would be smaller quantity crime. Think about it...say you robbed a store and in today's world you have to pay a $100 fine and got time served. OH ouch hurt them! And if they do go to put inside or prison it isn't shameful either. They get room and board, have gyms, be in motion to college, eat steaks, get cable, can smoke, have soda and coffee, own a library, and get internet ALL on the taxpayers dime for committing crimes. How is that bad? I don't have a gym bias, can't afford college, don't eat steak, don't have cable, rarely can afford to even buy soda, and my town doesn't hold a library or even a park. And I have never committed a crime in my life! Now contained by a world were one actually got punished (in this overnight case by shaming) the same scenario...You know if you rob the store that you will have to stand in front of the store, contained by prison stripes, with hand cuffs and shackles on, with a sign around your nouns saying that you robbed the store and got caught. You must also apologize to every one entering and exiting that store for doing this (this is because you directly cause the prices to turn up since the store would have to take a loss). You must do this for 1 day for every dollar worth of merchandise you stole during their entire business hours. You would also hold to pay the state back for your breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Plus you would have to take-home pay the store back 5 time the amount you stole! Would you want to rob that store? I doubt it! Oh and instead of costing the taxpayers a bunch of money for a cell for this individual it would only cost a few guards and one bullet if he tried to escape. This would only work for nonviolent crimes though. Some folks just need to be in prison!
Oy! the friendly jewish accountant has this right from a historical perspective. That might not be as efficient today. Celebrities and politicians seem to have no sense of shame, exposing their wrongdoing has little effect. Even for regular race, it seems to have little effect due to public apathy.
Dylan makes a great point, but oh how I wish it still worked that channel. I'm going to guess that you're reading the Scarlett Letter? In ancient days, we didn't have jails and often the scourge of wrongdoing be the reputation that came with it. People found themselves outcasts, and only contained by the figurative sense, which is worse. Had they actually been thrown out of town, they wouldn't enjoy had to face the public ignominy.
