Help me with my book! What if most things were legal?
Suppose the following were perfectly legal: Drugs, prostitution, fighting to the death, euthanasia, etc.
Still illegal: Harming others without their consent (e.g. murder, assault, rape, stealing, etc.)
Think of the old west and how that was. Most towns didn't' have Law men and had to hire outside help when some desperado's came into town. IN that kind of society the strong makes the laws and if the strong allows things like that to happen than it would depend on the people. Most could swing either way but there would always be some one trying to change it.
what about it? there are many people who believe exactly the way you're proposing, that the only moral offenses would be those that injure other people. the problem with things like drugs and prostitution, of course, is that others are harmed indirectly. even euthanasia has implications about what it says about a society that doesn't value all human life. of course, we consider it immoral to allow a non-human animal to continue suffering...
what book are we helping you with?
I think we would slowly turn in to an anarchist society and we would loose all 'control' and become a culture that did not cair or help each other because we would be to afraid of each other
what's your question?
Lots more people would die.
its not...? i just got in from the middle east..i need a few days to adjust
Answers:
As a premise, that is far too lose to be sustainable.
For example, fighting to the death is legal, yet murder is not? How do you differentiate between the two after the event? 'Oh yes office, he wanted to fight... honest!'
Those areas you have listed are far too 'gray' to consider a blanket legalisation.
If only everything was black and white lol
