Why aren't colleges equipped with auto alarm systems to alert students of violence?
Why aren't proven dependable students equipped with devices on their persons which they might employ to trigger those campus-wide alarms at a moment's notice?
This question was asked by a user using the handle 'Can we afford this?'
The answer is, NO! We can not afford this! Too much money spent on a program with little return!
Answer me this, before this incident ... how many college massacres were there in the last 10 years? The last 20 years? The last 50 years?
Sure we could put an 'early warning system' in place on every college campus in America, and most of them would never be activated (unless tests are run!).
A far better idea is to arm the Campus Police, and make them a part of the law enforcement community! Instead of 'proven dependable students' setting off an alarm (BTW ... How would the students pinpoint the area of criminal activity? Could setting off the alarm just 'stampede' the students into the situation?) we could have trained, armed Law enforcement officers on the scene in seconds!
Think this all of the way through! Do you want 'dependable' alone ... or 'dependable and trained'?
To those colleges who have already sent the campus cops to the local police academy, GOOD JOB! To those who haven't ... WHY?!?!?!?
In reality, a college campus is a community, and deserves fully trained law enforcement officers on the job 24/7. I would demand no less of a campus that I send my child to!
Campus violence is a hotpoint now, because of the recent incident (my condolences to the families of the victims) but think about it ... are college campuses really any mopre dangerous than any other community?
In reality, our government rather spends our money elsewhere. So there is nothing left to protect ourselves from the crazies.
I understand where your angst is coming from....and I am sure that in light of today's events, my timing is bad......but............
I am not sure we want to create the feeling out there that everything is so terrible and you have to be prepared for a gunman every minute of your life......Truth is.....life is actually a pretty safe thing......and creating fear and mistrust is bad for all of us.....
They are in place, the campus chose not to set them off until to late - 9:28
Because they are colleges not prisons.
im sorry, that is a great idea but think of the money it would take to stop something that happens every 4 years. The chance that your school would be atacked is so rare that people dont want to spend the money.
Answer:
In a free society occasionally a madman is going to kill a bunch of innocent kids. You want that to stop start embracing facism baby.
Improving our school system with this type of device IS practical. In the midst of a crisis, take off your ring. It's as simple as that. Students carry their own phones. They can also carry, and learn how to properly use, a little magical button.
If this country's system evolves in such a way as to provide defensibility of this nature, then we will have become less complacent toward those who threaten us. It is not unreasonable to suggest that what occurred today was in reality an act of war. There are many who despise our less prudent policies, particularly excessivism. In fact, those who brought the details of that very cruel act of terror against our people may have been working for a government with more global influence than those in the Middle East. I'm not suggesting this to convince anyone to start blaming the innocent international community. I'm doing so with the hope that competent people will grow concerned for national safety standards and help us to do better than belittle our freedom.
For the same reason planes did not have any alarm system that would alert the government that terrorist were on board.
You all are looking at this from the wrong angle, you want alarms
to tell you when there is a madman in the vicinity. I think the US is mad to sell guns on every street corner. You cant have guns so readily available and then expect this not to happen. Its a straight choice ,, have ya guns and expect a massacre every so often or ban all sales of guns and its les likely someone so young can acquire the tools for such incidents
