The media only focuses on cute kids/beautiful people in crime drama.
I find it more likely that a reporter would say 'Boss! I need to go to Portugal to cover a kidnapping!' than they would 'Boss! I need to go to Toledo to cover a kidnapping!'
Perhaps if the parents had moved to Hawaii just before it happened there would be more media interest.
