Don't you think Sting's fine is a bit over the top?
25,000 quid compensation for a dismissal sounds too much: do the courts set the fines according to how much the accused can afford? This can't be right.

No courts do not set the level of damages in civil cases in relation to how much the accused can afford to pay - the damages are assessed according to the facts of the case.
In this case, the court were shocked that the claimant didn't try to get more in aggravated damages, which suggests that they would have been willing to award more had it been claimed for!
The breakdown was round about £10k for injury to feelings and reputation, and £16k for loss of earnings - if you think about how much they would have had to pay her maternity pay wise etc, it wasn't excessive in my view. You can't just sack people for being pregnant! Even if you are the uber-cool Sting.
