Do immigrants, legal or otherwise, believe we should have to learn/understand their language?
I was 3rd in line at the drive up glass today at Taco Bell and waiting about 15 minutes. I could hear the speaker person speaking in amazingly bad english, trying to explain that she was new. She kept wise saying "hold on"...that was all that was clear. By this time, in attendance were 6 cars behind me in queue. I did get to place my order, but as I turned the corner to the pickup window, I saw that the 1st two vehicle in front of me were still waiting. So I drove around and left. Poor folks within back of me...It must have been adjectives goofed up since I drove off without picking up my order. Anyway, later crossed the road to Wendys. Same problem, only this time the non-english speaking person was rude to me. So again, I placed my writ and drove off again. Then went to McDonalds and there I get YET AGAIN, another one who could barely speak english. I remember when people who came to America tried sturdy to learn our language and know people from Israel and Russia who pinch strides and pride in speech
That's what you get, Push 1 for English, 2 for Spanish, 3 for......... kind of getting sickening that you have to put up next to that kind of garbage just to command a lousy sandwich. Yes,
& it's a bunch of BS too!!
nest time walk inside, some of the people that work at these places do try and learn English, if they weren't the company's that they work for would not put them on the drive through window, she might not hold been able to understand you, and what you be ordering, also there could have be something wrong with the headset he or she was wearing and was powerless to hear you correctly. I clearly understand what you are saying, it's get really difficult at time especially when they look at you similar to you're stupid.
However, most immigrants try to learn basic comprehensible English formerly joining a workforce. Illegal immigrants or jobs where immigrant don't have to socialize with English speaking people might tend to differ.
This is a natural part of the assimilation process. Your ancestors would hold gone through this, too (unless you're 100% British). My grandparents are a mix of Germans and Slovenians. They were first generations and their parents only intellectual English after the children went to elementary school and learned English that they come home and taught their parents. My great-grandfathers worked in union shops and their work requirements were met by friends and family members who also worked in that and were bilingual. My great-grandmothers had assistance at local grocery stores where staff and friends be bilingual. They learned English, but it takes time. English is statistically and structurally one of the most difficult languages to revise, so it's not like they just need to dance sit in class for a few hours a week and they'll be fluent.
Grant patience and grace to those who are working through the natural process of assimilation. I know it's not straightforward and can be frustrating, but you wouldn't be where you are now if someone hadn't done this for your ancestors.
Two more points on this:
1. There's actually statistical background indicating that immigrants today assimilate much faster than our ancestors (see source link).
2. Simply because she had broken English doesn't mean she didn't have a handle on English. Listening and speaking skills in second languages do not necessarily go hand-in-hand (meaning you can be more advanced contained by listening without being at matching level in speaking, just resembling you can be more advanced in reading without being at matching level in writing.) It might have be that she really was new to the job and didn't know how to enter surrounded by the data she was hearing.
I live in mazatlan mexico and there are alot of americans living and working here i never go and get angry and tell them to learn spanish it's there life span as long as they aren't rude to me it's no problem but like you said they shouldn't make you learn their discourse. Amen. My mother is dying and in the hospital and I can't get a nurse who speaks enough English to put in the picture me how she is doing today.
Get the Republicans in office again and we WILL have English as our national spoken communication.
Ok, some people get offended glibly. No one is generalizing, when you visit a country other than America, you are required to appreciate their language. You bring your little translation book, you educate yourself with their currency. Unless we are to believe that citizens from Mexico are uneducated, which I dont believe, you have to assume that they will learn our dialect and understand our currency. With that being said, if a person have broken engish, atleast they tried. Atleast you understand what they are saying. We have to hold patience. We expect it when visiting other countries. Now If I hear spanish only self spoken I do lose my patience. I believe it is rude to speak at a place of business in Korean, Vietnamese, Spanish or any other language while english speaking customers are present. Believing that a being should learn our language before working here is NOT racist. I love race who generalize...
Anyway, learning a new language is not the easiest entity to do. Obviously the one that was rude to you was rude to you in english...otherwise you would own not understood (and I'm sure they were not rude to you for no reason)
Just because you have a sturdy time understanding an accent doesn't mean they can't speak english....oh and if you want someone born within the united states to take your order, try finding a resturant that pays their force more.
(Oh btw terri...havent we had a republican in office for 8 years...If a republican is the answer, why hasn't it be situated already?)
Yes. I'm not racist, but they think America is their country more than ours. They want America to be more like their country only richer. They still want to hang on to all of their unrightful traditions.
My Ex-Girlfriend was forced to move to mexico for an Arranged marriage beside a person she really hates. She called me a week ago, 1 light of day after High school graduation to tell me about it. Every year I pity her.
She tells me the same stuff that I just said how mexico is trying to do this. The root why she is so open minded is that she really isnt 100% mexican, she actually is part Korean and French as ably...
i don't similar to it either..i don't like it when i make phone call and get people on the other end that you cant figure out..but that's what happens when these places hire cheap labor...they really don't care whether you can understand them or not...adjectives they are worried about is how much they need to pay these workers and near no perks This shows how dumb Americans are....
Immigrants tend to be the ones who end up at fast food job, why? Because they are low wage workers. You really think some average American citizen is going to work at a drive-thru window for minimum wage?...NO! But immigrants will and that's why their nearby...
Instead of blaming immigrants, why don't you blame McDonalds or Wendy's for hiring them? Yah dumb nut.
In answer to your title question, I have never met an immigrant who expected me to learn their local language. Responding to your story, let me just vote that English isn't the easiest language to learn, especially when you are trying to balance a busy life span with kids and working a minimum wage job. It's not like the race you are talking about can afford to take a formal speech course. Immigrants in low-paying jobs get abundantly of flack from people who roll their eyes and say things like "God, is it too complex to learn 'mcnuggets'?" or "ugh, my 3 year old could do better" or "jeez, go hindmost to china." They may not understand every word, but those who are just learning English still get the tone.
