A company i no longer work for is still direct depositing paychecks in my account?

what law is there against me using the money please help thank you
Illegal Conversion.

You have a duty, under law, to mitigate the damages the 'Mistake' has caused to both you and the company by informing them of the error.
If its your money it should be no problem but if its not then you need to notify the company. Because if they finally catch on to their mistake you may have to pay it back.
Yes, and eventually they'll want the money back. It would constitute a misappropriation of funds. It would also constitute conversion. Put the cash in an interest bearing account. Let it accumulate interest while knowing you will eventually have to return the principle. Wait and see how long it takes them to figure it out. You'll make a few bucks, not get sued and not go to jail.

They are also probably sending in your witholding to the I. R. S. They will probably have a bit more difficulty getting that money back. Make sure when you get your W4 that the extra pay is not shown, that is unless they don't ask for it back. You might also get a nice tax refund.
My gut response is awesome! Are they hiring. But, if you are not entitled to the proceeds, and you cash it out, you will be obligated to repay the amount. It is simply theft by transfer. It was be the same as taking money from a cash register that you had access to open.
Thou shalt not steal.

It's not yours. Give it back. As an employer, I would be so impressed with your honesty, that I would probably let you keep some of it.

The person in charge of payroll should get the can.
Put it this way, you have been unware that this has been going on until the contact you, because you dont really pay attention to your accounts.
THEIR ARE MANY LAWS. DON'T SPEND IT BECAUSE WHEN THEY FIGURE IT OUT AND THEY WILL FIGURE IT OUT THEY WILL COME AFTER YOU FOR ALL THE MONEY. LEGALLY THEY CAN SUE YOU FOR THE RECOVERY OF THEIR FUNDS. REMEMBER IT IS THEIR FUNDS.
BUT IF YOU WANT EMPTY THE ACCOUNT CLOSE IT AND OPEN AN ACCOUNT AT ANOTHER BANK THEY WILL KNOW THE MINUTE THEY TRY TO DEPOSIT ANOTHER CHECK AND THE FUNDS ARE RETURNED. THEY WILL INVESTIGATE THEN THEY WILL TRY TO CONTACT YOU FOR THE MONEY IF THEY CAN'T THEY WILL SUE YOU. BUT HEY HAVE TO FIND YOU TO SUE YOU SO HIDE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE FOR A COUPLE OF DOLLARS.

ARE YOU A DEMOCRAT? JUST WONDERING
I dont know about the law and if you can spend it or not, but if you have not earned the money then using it would be the same as stealing it if you are sure youare no longer employed by this company. you must report this to the company but wait till your checks clear and they will most likley let you make payments back to them.

Answers:
It's their mistake. Why would you be held accountable?
DO NOT USE THE MONEY. You need to contact the company and tell them the problem. Also tell your bank the problem.
At any time when the company figures out the mistake they can tell you to give back the money in full immediately. And if you dont have the entire amount of money to give them immediately YOU will be in trouble with the law. It is considered stealing. Yes they gave it to you by accident but you have NO right to the money.
Same thing happened to a friend of my mothers and the company demanded the money back immediately. They had to give the money back right away or face legal charges.
So unless you want to go to jail, dont touch that money and contact the company to have it stopped. Or close the account and open a new one.
